About

Camp Summer Shake Up is a unique program that takes place annually during the month of June in Marfa, Texas. The program began in 2015 and has grown into an ongoing partnership between Marfa Public Schools and organizations and non-profits in the Marfa and broader tri-county community. The camp fills two very real summer needs for local students by offering nutritious meals along with fun, enriching activities.

Summer Shake Up is offered at no cost to families by pairing the school’s federally-funded summer meal program with activities provided by area organizations who generously donate staff time, materials, and enthusiasm. By combining the food program with theatre, dance, art, music, and outdoor activities, attendance has grown each year and in 2019, seventy-five students attended the camp each week.

The program uses the school cafeteria as a hub and daily meeting spot with breakfast served each morning. After breakfast, students board the school bus to go to different “camps” from 9 am - 12 noon. The bus returns students to the cafeteria for lunch and parents pick up their students at 12:30 pm.

Participating organizations include Ballroom Marfa, Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, Chinati Foundation, Fort Davis State Park, KRTS Marfa Public Radio, Marfa & Presidio County Museum, Marfa Live Arts, Marfa Public Library, Marfa Studio of the Arts, McDonald Observatory, and the Museum of the Big Bend.
